China has officially opened the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in Guizhou Province, about 685 miles northwest of Hong Kong.
The monumental structure now holds the title of the world’s highest bridge.
Towering at a staggering 625 metres above the Beipan River, the bridge redefines the landscape of this mountainous region and revolutionises travel, reducing the journey across the canyon from two hours to just two minutes, making life much easier for locals and visitors.
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge boasts the world’s largest span of any bridge constructed in a mountainous area, reflecting China’s ambitious mission to enhance infrastructure and connectivity, particularly in underdeveloped locales like Guizhou.
The new bridge is a game-changer for many residents and travellers who would previously drive through the intricate winding roads of this mountainous terrain.
Guizhou’s mountainous terrain also previously presented significant challenges for transporting goods.
The bridge is expected to enhance connectivity between cities, which will help lower transportation costs for businesses and encourage economic growth in the region.
Built over three years and eight months, with construction beginning in January 2022, the bridge weighs a staggering 22 000 tons, which is equivalent to three Eiffel Towers.
In preparation for the bridge to open, a robust five-day testing process was conducted in August. Engineers drove 96 trucks onto the bridge to ensure its structural integrity, confirming that it was safe for traffic. It officially opened on Sunday, September 28.
For the thrill-seekers, the bridge offers an exhilarating bungee jumping experience and an opportunity to walk on a glass walkway that towers 580 meters above ground and offers breathtaking views of the canyon below.
