Analytics aviation firm OAG has revealed the world’s most connected airports in 2025, with London Heathrow Airport (LHR) taking the top spot for the third year running.
In the last eighteen months, international air travel has experienced a resurgence, with global passenger volumes exceeding pre-pandemic levels in 2024. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), total air traffic last year was 3.8 percent higher than in 2019, and there are no signs of this trend slowing down in 2025.
After reviewing the data, OAG has identified which airports have capitalized on these record levels of traffic by offering the most connections to international destinations. OAG’s ‘Megahubs 2025’ report, now in its tenth year, is based on flight data from 100 of the world’s largest airports.
This data focuses on the total number of scheduled seats from September 1, 2024, to August 31, 2025. The OAG team specifically analyzed data from the busiest day in global aviation during that year, August 1, 2025, calculating the total number of possible international connections within any six-hour window, as well as the total number of destinations served.
Heathrow continues to dominate
With a total of 59,240 possible connections to 226 destinations worldwide, London Heathrow was once again crowned the world’s most connected airport, having taken top spot in both 2024 and 2023. In fact, the UK’s largest airport and home to British Airways has long been a dominant force in OAG’s rankings, having come first in the inaugural study back in 2015.
In second place was Istanbul (IST), surging up the rankings from 8th place in 2024 thanks to a 25 percent increase in the number of connections offered. Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) climbed from fourth place to third place in 2025, while Kuala Lumpur (KUL) – ranking second in 2024 – dropped out of the top three into fourth place.
“Heathrow’s sustained dominance reflects its vital role in global travel, while Istanbul’s rapid rise shows how hubs are evolving to meet demand,” said John Grant, Chief Analyst at OAG. “Our 2025 ranking underscores the balance between established gateways and ambitious challengers worldwide, which has developed over ten years of Megahubs.”

Chicago reigns supreme in North America
When it comes to North America, only two airports made the top ten most connected in 2025 – Chicago O’Hare (ORD) in seventh place and Atlanta (ATL) in eighth.
Chicago O’Hare offered over 65,000 connections to 297 destinations on its busiest day this year, representing a 17 percent growth with an additional 15 destinations compared to last year, helping it climb two places in the global rankings.
“Chicago O’Hare and Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson continue to play a vital role in connecting travelers across North America and the world,” said Grant. “Their ability to expand destinations and connections underscores their importance in shaping the region’s aviation network.”
