Qantas will deploy its superjumbo to Johannesburg for the first time, replacing its current Boeing 787-9 that links the two cities. The introduction of the Airbus A380 on this route will see the variant, for the first time, being operated on a route solely remaining in the Southern Hemisphere. Upgrading the aircraft from the 787 to the A380 will double the route capacity and add a first-class cabin for elite passengers.
From September 30th, the A380 will push back from Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport (SYD), destined for Johannesburg O. R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), five times a week on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
The airline’s website has been updated accordingly, with QF63 departing at 10:30 and arriving at JNB at 16:10, with a flight time of 14 hours and 40 minutes. Its return service, QF64, will leave South Africa at 18:40, arriving the next day at 15:35 in Sydney, with a return block time of 11 hours and 55 minutes.
Qantas wants to attract more females into operational roles within the group, and today is promoting that on International Women’s Day.
Joining British Airways and Emirates
Commencing A380 services to Johannesburg sees Qantas joining British Airways and Emirates as the three A380 operators at the South African airports, connecting Heathrow and Dubai, respectively.
