The expansion of Munich Airport’s Terminal 1 is “progressing smoothly”, with a new pier set to open in the first half of 2026, the airport said in a statement.
The €665 million expansion project will create “a state-of-the-art terminal” for non-Schengen traffic, with the capacity to serve up to an additional six million passengers per year, according to the airport.
After Frankfurt, Munich airport is Germany’s second busiest aviation hub, having served 41.6 million travellers in 2024 with a route network of 224 destinations in 66 countries.
The new pier will have capacity for up to 12 smaller aircraft or six wide-body aircraft simultaneously, with carriers such as American Airlines, Delta, Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways anticipated to use the new space.
Munich Airport CEO Jost Lammers said: “It is impressive to see how the Terminal 1 concourse is gradually taking shape. You can now easily imagine how passengers will arrive and depart here in less than a year’s time. We are not only creating additional capacity, but also a new level of quality and comfort for our passengers.”
Following a trial period “in the coming months”, the new terminal pier is expected to officially open within the first six months of 2026. It will include check-in areas with centralised security checks that feature “the latest CT technology”, as well as “spacious” waiting areas, retail and culinary outlets and relaxation zones, the airport said.
