Lufthansa is set to expand its free inflight messaging service this summer.
The carrier introduced free messaging for customers on short and medium-haul flights in early 2024, and will now extend the service to long-haul flights.
Passengers on intercontinental services will be able to send and receive an unlimited number of messages (including photos) “via the familiar apps”.
When free messaging was introduced for short and medium-haul customers, the carrier said that the only prerequisite was that passengers must log into FlyNet with a Miles & More card number, or with an email address registered with the Lufthansa Group Travel ID.
Airlines including Turkish, Etihad, Air Canada and Finnair have also introduced free messaging in recent years, and British Airways has also announced plans to do so as part of its £7 billion transformation programme.
Fellow Lufthansa Group member SWISS introduced free inflight messaging on long-haul flights in 2023, and Austrian Airlines also offers the service on selected long-haul routes.
Commenting on the news Heiko Reitz, chief customer officer at Lufthansa Airlines, said:
“What is already a great success on short and medium-haul flights will also be very popular with our guests on long-haul flights.
“Being reachable even during a long flight has long been a basic need and a decisive factor when choosing an airline.
“Free messages, as well as inflight internet, for example, therefore offer a portfolio of digital services that is very attractive to our customers.”
