Regional and international airlines operating in South Africa are adjusting fares and adding fuel surcharges as rising oil prices linked to conflict in the Middle East push up operating costs.
Fuel prices at coastal airports in South Africa have now surged by over 100% in the past month.
According to IATA’s fuel price monitor, last updated on March 13, the average price of jet fuel in Africa last week was $4,43 (R74,26) per US gallon, about R19,60 per litre, representing a 96,3% increase on mid-Feb and 106,8% up on the mid-March 2025 price.
Global average jet fuel prices came in at $4,17 (R69,91) per US gallon, about R18,40 per litre, marking an 82,8% increase on mid-Feb and 94,4% increase on the mid-March 2025 price.
