Ethiopian Airlines, that is recognized as the largest carrier in Africa in terms of revenue and profit by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), relaunched flights to Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, just six years ago, in July 2018, after the relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea were normalized.
The Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority recently disseminated a letter accusing Ethiopian Airlines of a range of offenses. According to the local media, these offenses included “persistent and deliberate unfair trading practices,” and “organized and systematic theft, tampering, damage, prolonged delays, and loss of passengers’ luggage without compensation in particular, along with unjustified and unauthorized price increases and other irregularities.”
Ethiopian Airlines refrained from revealing the details of the letter received from the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority.
“Ethiopian Airlines has received a notice from the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority through a letter dated 21 July 2024 indicating the suspension of all Ethiopian Airlines flights to Eritrea, effective September 30, 2024,” Ethiopian Airlines X statement simply said.
The carrier only stated that “the specific reasons for this suspension have not been disclosed to us,” and promised to share further information “once it is obtained.”
According to airline officials, it is strongly advised that travelers who are planning to fly with Ethiopian Airlines to Eritrea should reassess their travel arrangements due to the temporary halt in flight operations.
