Effective from 1 October 2025, Emirates will prohibit the use of all power banks onboard its flights, citing enhanced safety measures following a comprehensive risk review.
While passengers may still carry one power bank under 100 Watt Hours, these devices may neither be used to charge personal electronics nor be recharged via the aircraft’s power supply. Accepted power banks must display their capacity rating, be stored in a seat pocket or under-seat bag (not overhead bins), and remain out of checked luggage.
The move addresses a growing number of lithium battery-related incidents across the aviation industry. Power banks, which typically use lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries, can pose a fire risk through a process called thermal runaway – a rapid, uncontrolled temperature rise that can cause fires, explosions, and toxic gas emissions. The risk is heightened in basic models lacking safeguards against overcharging.
By banning in-flight use and ensuring devices are stored within easy reach, Emirates aims to enable cabin crew to respond swiftly in the rare event of a fire. The airline emphasised that safety remains a core value, with continuous measures in place to protect passengers and crew.
