It is time to celebrate our heritage!

September is Heritage Month, and this Friday is Heritage Day, a public holiday, so we have a long weekend to chill and celebrate the things that make South Africa special.

If you haven’t booked your weekend getaway don’t worry about it, there are probably loads of things to do right on your doorstep. Here are some ideas:

  • Pack a picnic and head for a nature reserve, there is sure to be one wherever you are. Take a book, a blanket and find a shady spot. If you are feeling energetic, put on your walking shoes, pack a daypack and start exploring.
  • Visit a museum. South Africa has a rich history and much of it is carefully recorded in our many museums and heritage sites. From the history of mankind to local personal stories, there is something for everyone.
  • Support local artists. Visit a craft market and buy something made here at home.
  • Visit a Battlefield. The southern tip of Africa has seen many wars and today the country is dotted with battlefields, commemorative gardens, and sites. Head for one and learn about those who fought for this land.
  • Plant an indigenous tree or shrub in your garden. You will come to appreciate it in time and the birds and insects will enjoy it from the start.

If you choose to stay at home, do what millions of your fellow countrymen will be doing. Have a braai. Building a fire and cooking on it is a universal activity. From the nomadic hunter-gatherers from ages past to the most ardent rugby fan, a braai has the ability to bring people together.

Whatever you choose to do, enjoy it, and celebrate our rich cultural heritage!
