Passengers travelling with lithium-ion battery-powered devices are being urged to familiarise themselves with updated air travel requirements aimed at reducing the risks of smoke, fire and heat at altitude.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) implemented updated guidance on January 1, 2026, through its Battery Guidance Document, which forms part of its Dangerous Goods Regulations.

LIFT, a recent IATA member, said passengers travelling with products containing lithium-ion batteries are required to carry these items in the cabin rather than placing them in checked baggage.

The airline said such items must not be used during take-off, landing or while the aircraft is taxiing. They should also be stored in the seat pocket in front of the passenger or kept on their person, rather than in overhead bins, so they can be monitored during the flight.
