South African airlines and carriers around the world are struggling with a sharp rise in jet fuel costs after the US-Israeli conflict with Iran disrupted global oil supplies, leaving travellers facing higher ticket prices and possible surcharges.

The war, which began with strikes on 28 February 2026, has caused major problems in the Strait of Hormuz. This narrow waterway carries about one-fifth of the world’s oil shipments.

Shipping traffic has slowed or stopped in many cases, cutting off supplies of crude oil and refined products like jet fuel.

As a result, jet fuel prices have surged dramatically in just a few weeks.
