Tips for hassle-free visa applications

South African travellers need visas for most countries and in particular major destinations including countries in the European Union, the USA, the United Kingdom, China and India, among others.

Specific visa requirements can vary depending on the country being visited, the purpose of travel, and the duration of stay.

It is important to research and understand the visa requirements for your specific destination well in advance of your planned travel date to ensure a smooth and hassle-free trip.

Here are a few tips that will make your application process a little easier.

  • Determine the type of visa you need: Most countries offer various types of visas, including tourist visas, business visas, and student, work and family visas.
  • Check your eligibility and requirements: Ensure you meet all the requirements before starting the application process.
  • Complete the online application form: Most visa applications begin online. Fill out the application form accurately and completely, providing all required information and supporting documents.
  • Gather the required documents for your in-person appointment: Typically, these will include your passport, recent passport-sized photographs, proof of travel arrangements, such as flight bookings, proof of accommodation, and financial statements to demonstrate your ability to support yourself during your stay.
  • Schedule the appointment: The in-person appointment can be at the country’s embassy or consulate, or an accredited Visa Application Centre. It is important to note that appointment availability may vary, so book your appointment well in advance of your intended travel date.
  • Pay the Visa fee: Fees vary from one country to another, and are usually non-refundable, regardless of whether your visa application is approved or denied.
  • What to expect at the appointment: Firstly, arrive on time. You may have to provide your fingerprints and have your photograph taken as part of the visa application process, and there may also be an interview.
  • Track your application: This can be done online, and the onus is on you to ensure you do this. If there appears to be a delay – follow up.
